I have run in a number of Altras now and am really happy with their progress as a shoe company over the last few years. Each new iteration of a shoe has gotten better, addressed previous issues and catered to a devoted base of runners who enjoy wide forefoot, zero drop shoes. This shoe, the Altra Lone Peak 2.0, comes as the 3rd version of a very popular shoe that I wasn’t that into in it’s first few forms. However, I am happy to report, this new version is climbing up the right tree (pun intended)!
With a bit more cushioning in the midsole and a softer, more flexible upper, the Lone Peak 2.0 shifts my opinion greatly from the 1.5 which I reviewed here as well. I love the upper’s comfortable, seamless flexibility mixed with just a bit more cushioning and protection underfoot. I think the combo makes for a rock-solid long distance performance shoe that should rip up trails of all distances.
My big dislikes involve weight (11+oz), durability (showing some subtle signs of wear) and the heel cup (way too thick as usual), but I’m able to look past those flaws and enjoy the ride. I plan on giving this shoe a real good go at the Oregon Coast 50k in a few weeks, so be sure to follow on all the social networks to hear my opinions post-race.
